U.S. denies S. Korea right to try soldier
Associated Press
SEOUL, South Korea — The U.S. military said Wednesday it has rejected South Korea’s request for jurisdiction over one of its soldiers involved in a traffic accident that led to the death of a local resident.
Pfc. Jeff Reybryant is accused of hitting a 51-year-old woman with his military truck in Dongducheon, north of Seoul, on June 10.
South Korea had requested jurisdiction over the case in July, said U.S. Forces Korea spokesman David Oten.
“The USFK has decided to retain and exercise its primary jurisdiction” over Reybryant, Oten said. “We always try to maximize jurisdiction over soldiers in every instance.” In 2002, U.S.-South Korean relations were strained when two teenage girls were killed by an American military vehicle. Two soldiers were put on trial and acquitted, prompting protests throughout South Korea.
Apparently mindful of the previous accident and fallout, U.S. President Bush and American military officials in Seoul offered a quick apology after the June accident.
