In Sungshin Women’s University, the best facility for the students is “Na,” provided by KTF?
Definitely, “Na” is the place for students. Students can use computers and facilities for free which are better than those offered by the school. Even the Digital Information service Center(DISC) of the library falls behind “Na” in its overall facilities and the quality of the computers. Besides, the number of computers in the school falls highly short. If someone goes to the DISC in order to refer to the Internet, mostly, she would wait for a long time or have to come back later because there aren’t any vacant seats there. Some of the computers in Soojeongkwan have defective mouses so that you have to use the Internet without a mouse. Some computers do not work at all. Compared to other schools which are still expanding computer provisions to each department room, the lack of computers in Sungshin is a very serious problem. “Na” has been able to relieve this problem a little.
However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that this useful facility was provided by a private company, not the school. In the Mirror’s survey, to the question, “What do you think about facilities like “Na,” built on the campus by a private company to obtain advertising results?” 23% of responding Sungshinians answered that it was better that we can use computers better than those offered by the school. This shows how strongly the students feel the need for good access to high-quality computers. And the responsibility to meet this need belongs to the school.
In Sungshin Women’s University, there is no lounge for the students?
“Na” is a useful place as a computer room. But it was made in place of the Green Lounge, which was the only resting place for the students. Then, where can the students rest comfortably? About the removal of the Green Lounge, 43.5% were of a negative opinion, which was about twice the percentage of those with a positive opinion. Though “Na” has great facilities, it can’t be given only a welcome. The Green Lounge was the Sungshinians’s place for making appointments and getting together for many purposes. In the survey, 33.8% said they had used the Green Lounge as a place for appointments, and 50.2% for club activities and other events. Now the place which students of any dongari or department could use for all kinds of student activities has disappeared.
Before the construction of “Na,” the school authorities said the music hall on the first floor in the Student Building would be rebuilt into a lounge as a substitute for the Green Lounge but a definite plan still hasn’t been decided. The construction of “Na” is long over and it is being run smoothly, but there’s no news about a new lounge being made.
The music hall on the first floor of the Student Building will be made into a lounge and the Green Lounge will be made into “Na.” This decision was made by a group mainly of some personnel from the school’s administration and the President of the Dongari Association. Before this matter was decided, the Dongari President should have gathered the students’s opinions. But the decision of the construction wasn’t even publicly announced. A rate of 44% among all answers about the survey didn’t know anything about the appearance of “Na” and only 47.5% among the 56% of answers who knew about “Na” had used “Na.”
If the music hall is changed to a lounge, the space will be wider than the previous Green Lounge. However, when we want to go to the lounge in order to get some rest, we will have to walk down four flights of stairs and to leave the Student Building, climb back four flights of stairs. On top of that, the place is poorly ventilated. So will we be able to really rest in the new lounge?
Though “Na” has many problems, Sungshinians answered that they don’t want it to be closed down. Most were of the opinion that we should make good use of the facilities which have already been made and focus on getting a new lounge. This is because at present, “Na” is a place which is needed as much as a lounge. The school should rapidly expand the needed facilities for the students and, above all, the students’ opinions be reflected in plans which are connected directly with the students’ convenience.
